Do you Kumihimo?

A few of my beady friends have started Kumihimo and I tell you I am keen to give it a shot.

What is Kumihimo?

"Kumihimo is a method of braiding silk threads developed in Japan which is traditionally performed on special wooden stands called Maru Dai and Takadai. The literal translation of Kumihimo means the "coming together (kumi) of threads (himo)".

I remember attending a craft show many years ago and seeing a wonderful Japanese lady providing demonstrations of this craft. She had the most beautiful, old wooden disc that she was using and had an assortment of the most beautiful threads and yarns I had ever seen.

I figure I already have a list of things I want to try so I may as well add Kumihimo to the list!

Just look at some of the beautiful braids you can make.

I reckon they would look rather delish with some of the special lampwork beads I own.

Have you tried Kumihimo?

I have done kumihimo with beads. I've posted some pictures on the blog back last summer when I first tried it. I've only done the basic braid with beads on 4 of the 8 threads, in my case I used knitting ribbons. It's fun to do and looks wonderful when it's completed. Have fun with it.

I love kumihimo. You can also string beads on the threads and create pieces like that. I use c-lon with size 8 seeds. I also have a piece to finish that I'm making with 11/0 seeds and 8lb. fireline. I even bought a second "loom" so I could use larger fibers (once big cords or ribbons are used in the foam it streatches and makes it hard to use thin cord). I can't wait to see what you create.

Too funny, I just met another jewelry designer at our local bead store 2-ish weeks ago. He had made an incredible bracelet using Kumihimo technique. He added the air blue opal 2x swarovski crystals and it looked stunning! I had to go home and take a look at youtube to see how it was done.

It's intriguing! I can't wait to see what you think of it if you try it!
