Attack of the lorikeets

When we visited Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary back in February we unfortunately missed the lorikeet feeding show. So during our recent visit there in June I was determined to feed the lorikeets. This time we caught both the 8.30am and 4pm feeds.

Well what an experience! I had seen pictures of people feeding the lorikeets with 4 0r 5 lorikeets on their head but nothing prepares you for the amount of lorikeets that come to feed.

Everyone is given a little metal tray. The trays are filled with honey water which the lorikeets love and are natually attracted to. Then you basically hold out the tray and wait for the lorikeets to land!

Spencer loved looking at the lorikeets and their pretty colours. I thought he might have been a bit scared of them as they certainly weren't scared of us! Whilst holding his little plate he would have up to 7 or 8 lorikeets on the tray at once and giggled away as the lorikeets landed.

Alan chose not to feed the birds during the morning show as he admitted he was a bit freaked out by sooo many birds but we encouraged him...ok... we bullied him into taking part in the afternoon feeding! I think in the end he was forced to overcome his fear as those lorikeets may be small but they are pushy little buggers. He did however have one feisty one who was considered the "dominant" of the bunch who kept fighting off the others as he landed. He's the angry looking one sitting on Alan's arm!

I of course had several birds land on my head but thankfully none of them pooped! This poor guy standing next to us had one do a massive wee on his head - poor guy was bald so it just ran down his head and into his ear...ewwww!
